[00:00:00] Welcome to the bold goal crusher podcast for anyone looking to stop letting life get in the way and start crushing bold goals. I'm your host, Sara Mayer, and I'm thrilled to navigate this journey with you because it's time to start boldly achieving without working double time. So let's dive in.
Hello Bold Goal Crushers! Today, we're going to have some real talk. Yup. Real talk from your consultant, Sara Mayer, your coach, your friend. Let's have some real talk about goals. So many times I talk to my clients, I talk to people out in the world. I get DMS, I get. Everything where people are trying to perfect their [00:01:00] thing so that they can launch it or get on track with their goals or get started, or they're waiting for something to happen in order to get going to get momentum.
So they know that this is their big, bold goal that they want to do. But they need to do these five things before it can happen, or these five things need to happen before they can get started. So how that may look is once I leave my nine to five job, then I can get started on my business, or once I pay off some part of the credit card bill, then I can invest in my business, or then I can do this.
And. The reality is those are just ways that we make ourselves feel better so that we can stay safe. And I've done that before myself. Once I do this, then I will be able to start working on that. And what happens is we end up pushing our big, bold goals down the line. We end up not being happy with [00:02:00] where we're at and not making progress at all until we figure out all the things.
So we sit there and say I need to figure out how this is going to happen before I can even get started. And. To be honest, we've talked about this a lot on the show. If it's something worth happening, if it's truly bold, it's going to take more than one year to get it done. And yes, there are objectives that you can set the steps to achieve that big, bold goal that can happen every month, every day, every week.
And you want to keep those steps. You want to make those. Realistic, measurable, you want to put timelines on them to keep moving forward. But many times our big, bold goal, when we actually dream that up, we don't know exactly how we're going to get there. It's a wild dream at first. And the way we get there may be different than the way we anticipate.
But the key is getting [00:03:00] started, taking one step towards that goal, and then another step, and then another step, and then another step. And you don't need to know all the steps. So I'll use the example of a client I worked with. She was writing a book and she Wanted to know all the steps. And so she was just like all of us.
She had all these ideas coming in her head. And so what I encouraged her to do is get a notebook, by the way, I sell these beautiful composition notebooks. And I told her to put all her goal related stuff in this notebook. And so she outlined what the goal was. And then as wild stuff came in her head What does the book cover look like?
She hadn't written a sentence yet, but that's what her mind was doing because she was so focused on achieving this goal. Her mind was throwing all this stuff at her about her book. She just write it down. Oh, here's an idea for a book cover. And then when she got to the point where she was actually designing the book cover, she had notes on that goal.
So I encourage you [00:04:00] get a goal notebook. I, this happens to be one of mine for each goal. And as those wild things that you're not ready for yet come into your mind, put them on paper so you don't forget. And then that way you're telling your mind, thank you for that. Keep the ideas coming. I'm capturing them over here.
And I won't forget about those when we get to that point. But right now we're focused on writing page one, which is the acknowledgement or whatever it is. So that's the key to goals. And A lot of us know that, and we still don't do it. So I'm going to use this example, myself included. I'm going to use this example.
I want you to think about McDonald's. McDonald's, the restaurant. Because many people are familiar with McDonald's. Actually, I think you probably live under a rock if you, I don't know McDonald's and McDonald's started, whether you know the founding history or not, you can probably piece it together.
McDonald's [00:05:00] started with one restaurant and before they even had a restaurant, before they even had burgers, before they even had employees, before they even figured out how to automate and make things very streamlined, they had an idea. The founder had an idea. I think there were two founders actually, and they had an idea.
And so I want you to imagine that founder sitting in their living room saying, I want to open a restaurant and their family may be saying, so what are you going to serve? And so they have all these ideas. This is similar to how your idea starts, they had all these ideas and what they actually did is they figured out how to get a place, how to start selling burgers, and then they figured out the rest on the way, they didn't need to know the whole story.
So imagine a different scenario. And we know McDonald's history today, their [00:06:00] nation worldwide chain, they have, they really focus on burgers. They do have good fries. They do have good cokes and they have some, a couple other menu items. We know the history with salads of what happened with them.
They're a franchise, they own real estate, all of that stuff comes with McDonald's. They own real estate they had a breakup with their founders. There's a whole story on that. And a lot of stuff happened in their company. Burger King also sells burgers. Wendy's also sells burgers. They had competition.
They still have competition. There's the whole thing about whose fries were better, Burger King or McDonald's and all this stuff. That's their history. So now I want you to imagine a different scenario. The founder is sitting in their living room and they say, I want to open a burger joint. And then they say, so what's going to happen when we get really big and we want to franchise, [00:07:00] what is the franchise agreement going to look like, how will we make sure that the burger that we haven't even created yet.
stays consistent. Let's write the franchisee agreement. Okay. Now that we have the franchisee agreement, now we need to think about what we're going to do when we try and release salads and they don't go well. Okay. Now that we figured out the salad thing. All right. So now we need to figure out Our drive thru strategy because our drive thrus are going to be really busy.
And so because of that, we might want to go to two drive thru lanes. And how would that work? You would tell that founder, whoever is your relatives sitting in your house, You haven't even made any burgers yet. Don't worry about that right now. You don't need to worry about that right now. [00:08:00] Put it in paper, put it down the road.
When we release the McRib and it flops or it goes so big and we don't want to carry it all year round or the salads flop, here's an idea how we might handle that. So many times we are like the founders of a company sitting in a living room before we've Even sold a single burger, worrying about all the what ifs that come with that.
And we need to start by taking one step at a time. What are we selling? How are we selling it? And how are we getting that burger out into the world quickly and then later refining it? And that works for every goal that we have. We don't need to worry about all the what ifs or making sure all the things are in place before we get started on the goal.
We need to just start simply making burgers and they may not be [00:09:00] good when we first start working on our goal. The steps we may take at the beginning, they just may not be good. We may end up going a different route. I am sure. Positive, there were several recipes for the burgers. I am sure they were not the same size they are now from the beginning.
And I am sure they experimented with putting lettuce on them and then decided they didn't need lettuce. And the right number of onions has not always been the number of onions that are on it right now. There have been variations and iterations, but the key is they got working on their goal and they started selling and making the burgers.
So it's time to, to start working on your goals because if you keep waiting for something to happen or for you to make it perfect or for you to figure out all the things that goal is not going to happen. And [00:10:00] it's going to be one of the things you regret,
or you'll talk yourself into saying it's not something you really wanted, or you'll say it's impossible for you. So let's get started. It's time to get started. So first set a bold goal, make sure it's truly bold and something you really want and desire. And then take out a notebook, outline the first two to three steps.
You don't have to have it all figured out. You don't need to know how you're going to franchise before you even build the first restaurant. So if that's your goal, don't worry about it. You will figure those steps out when you get there because you will have tools. You will built up, have built up confidence.
You will be different as a business owner. You will be equipped to handle those things when you get there. You're not equipped to handle those things right now. It's time to start making the burgers. So let's get to [00:11:00] it. Let's start making the burgers. Even if they aren't good at first, let's get them done.
It doesn't need to be perfect. All right, bold goal crushers. It's time to crush your goals and everything that gets in the way without working double time. So let's get to it.
