Sara Mayer: Welcome to the bold goal crusher podcast for anyone looking to stop letting life get in the way and start crushing bold goals. I'm your host, Sara Mayer, and I'm thrilled to navigate this journey with you because it's time to start boldly achieving without working double time. So let's dive in.
Sara Mayer: Hello, Bold Goal Crushers. I'm super excited about this episode. Today, we are going to talk about the difference between goals and results. And let me remind you, we need to stop setting results. I've talked about this on a couple of episodes, [00:01:00] but it's time to break up with this habit. So, 1st, let me start out when we are doing goal setting.
Sara Mayer: Oftentimes we're not doing it correctly. We maybe have fallen into the trap of setting smart goals. And so we took these really big ideas, and then we shrunk them down. So I want to break up with that habit. So the first step in setting a goal is to dig in and really think about what you truly want. This is a reflection exercise and there are no right or wrong answers.
Sara Mayer: So get the smart goals out of your head. Open up a notebook. Start writing every single thing you could possibly want in life. Your goals. are tied to that big dream. They're tied to being dreamy. And so once you have all these ideas on paper, next it's time to make them goals. [00:02:00] Now I'm not saying to pick up the smart goals and put them in that format.
Sara Mayer: It's time to really look at what could the goals be out of these dreams and desires and passions. Many times this is where we go wrong. Because what I've seen over and over is people setting goals that are really results. I'm going to say that again. I've seen people set goals that are really results.
Sara Mayer: So your goals should be in your control. They should be achievable. They should be something you are able to do. Now they may be a stretch. They may be bold. They may take a long time. You may have a gap from where you're at right now and where you're going, but those goals definitely are attainable and there's something that you can do.
Sara Mayer: But what happens is many times people set a result. So, as a goal, and then they wonder why [00:03:00] they're not successful at achieving goals and then they beat themselves up. So I'll use an example. When I was a young girl, I wanted, I rode horses, and I had a goal to become a world champion equestrian. I wanted to win at the world championships.
Sara Mayer: And that really wasn't the goal. That's a result of me achieving a goal. The result is that some panel of judges that are totally subjective would pin a first place ribbon on. And that my horse would do every single thing right so that I could win that ribbon. And in reality, if I was chasing that goal, there are so many factors that play into that.
Sara Mayer: Other people's horses, whether they're nicer than my horse, more well trained other people spending more time training the judges, whether or not they liked how I executed all these [00:04:00] other things played into it. So, the likelihood of me being able to achieve this goal was reduced because it actually was a result.
Sara Mayer: So my goal really should have been to become an accomplished equestrian that can compete at the highest level and deliver the best performance. Now, many of you are smart goal. People like, well, that's not smart. It's not measurable. It is totally measurable. And how you measure that is, can I compete at the world championship level?
Sara Mayer: Did I get in? Yes. Did I leave it all on the table while I was there and not make any mistakes? Yes, measurable achieved, but there were a lot of little steps that went into doing that. I had to practice. I had to actually train my horse to be ridden because he was a driving horse. It wasn't really my horse.
Sara Mayer: It was somebody else's horse. I never owned him. But there were a lot of steps that went into achieving that goal of competing at that [00:05:00] level, being able to compete at that level and put on a really solid performance. And because I was able to complete all these steps that went into that and the activities that I needed to do to be able to accomplish that goal, the result was I became a world So we need to stop setting results as the goal because we don't have control of the goal, the result, sorry.
Sara Mayer: We don't have control of the result often. So for example, I see a lot of people who set goals to lose a certain number of pounds, but in reality, the goal should be to become healthy and the steps to get there are to eat right, to exercise a certain number of times a day, to improve performance on exercise.
Sara Mayer: And the result is You may become, you may lose weight, you may become more toned, you may whatever that is, but the goal is to become healthy. [00:06:00] So let's stop setting results because we set ourselves up to fail. When we set results and we don't see progress towards those, that's when we end up quitting because we're discouraged because our goal is actually a result of the activity.
Sara Mayer: So let's focus on activities and lofty, dreamy goals that we can measure when we actually accomplish it, but it doesn't need to be in a smart, weird format by X day, I will do this.
Sara Mayer: We can measure almost everything. So let's do that. Stop sending results, people. It's time to crush your goals and everything that gets in the way.
